Sensus Delivers 1 Millionth iPERL Meter To The City Of O'Fallon On World Water Day
Smart water network solution drives additional revenue and conservation for utilities
Sensus, a leading utility infrastructure company, is celebrating World Water Day with the delivery of its 1 millionth iPERL residential water meter to the City of O’Fallon, Mo. The United Nations General Assembly established World Water Day to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater and to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
“The iPERL is a critical component of our smart water network technology,” said Peter Mainz, President and CEO at Sensus. “When we introduced this technology about two years ago, we knew its accuracy and leak detection would help utilities save money and water. Indeed, research commissioned by Sensus found that worldwide, smart water networks can save utilities up to $12.5B a year.”
The City of O’Fallon understands the importance of water management and has installed more than 12,000 iPERL’s as part of its deployment of the Sensus AquaSense smart water network solution. The zero-lead iPERL enables utilities to improve system performance, capture additional revenue and support conservation efforts through leak detection and usage accuracy. AMI connectivity to the open standards-based FlexNet utility communication network and 14 separate alarms allows for greater system monitoring and data gathering.
“Conserving water and increasing operational efficiency drove us to this smart water network solution,” said Dan Scherer, Water & Sewer Manager at City of O’Fallon. “In the first year after deploying FlexNet and the iPERL meters, our unaccounted for water dropped from about eighteen to ten percent. We can also better serve our customers that have usage questions by accessing the graphing feature included in the software program.”
The implementation was completed in July of 2011. O’Fallon has already experienced increased revenue, a decrease in unaccounted for water loss, freeing staff up to perform other duties as they are not reading meters anymore, and pin-point location of all meters within our system via our GIS mapping system.
Water utilities nationwide are increasingly selecting composite products, like the Sensus iPERL, to meet pending provisions to the Safe Water Drinking Act that will take effect in 2014. Through its solid-state design, iPERL exceeds American Water Works Association (AWWA) standards in accuracy and sets an industry standard with a 20-year assurance warranty for accuracy, more than doubling the guaranteed accuracy of other products in the market.
