WEF Announces Pacific Southwest Organics Residuals Symposium

Sixth in a series of regional symposia will focus on western states

Alexandria, VA — Co-sponsored by the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and U.S. EPA Region 9, "Pacific Southwest Organics Residuals Symposium: Recycling of Non-Hazardous Organic Residuals to Products and Energy" will focus on the innovative treatment and uses for organic residuals in the western states. Sixth in a series of regional organic residuals symposia, the first five events were held in Chicago, Illinois.

Designed to bring together professionals for the exchange of information and ideas on residuals management opportunities, the symposia promotes reuse or recovery of valuable byproducts of the wastewater treatment process. Previous events emphasized the transfer of technology to facilitate the development and implementation of innovative processes and systems and resulted in networking opportunities among individuals involved in developing, testing, and implementing technological advances.

Selected papers for the western symposium will cover the development and marketing of innovative uses of biosolids, manure, greenwaste, and other organic residuals, as well as address regulatory and siting challenges. Technical sessions will focus on the production and composition of municipal solids and animal manure, on-site management as it relates to value-added products, and innovative uses both on and off-site. Societal impact (technical and institutional challenges) on product use, economics, research needs, and policy guidance will also be addressed.
