Eimco Water Technologies (EWT) has extensive experience in the anaerobic treatment of industrial wastewaters and has access to a number of leading anaerobic technologies throughout the world.
Anaerobic wastewater treatment is the biological treatment of wastewater without the use of air or elemental oxygen. In anaerobic treatment organic pollutants are converted by anaerobic microorganisms to a renewable energy source in the form of biogas (methane).
Any strong organic wastewater is a potential candidate for anaerobic treatment including food processing, chemicals production, distillery, brewery, biofuels, production, pulp/paper manufacturing, pharmaceutical, dairy processing, and meat/seafood processing wastewaters. It is not uncommon to achieve greater than 90% reduction in COD from anaerobic systems, and they can be combined with aerobic treatment to complete treatment solution.
The most basic anaerobic process is a lagoon with either a natural or synthetic cover. Such systems have been in use for decades and operate quite effectively when plenty of space is available. In many industrial applications, space is an issue which is when high rate anaerobic treatment systems are favored. In a high rate anaerobic treatment system the anaerobic bacteria are maintained in a comparatively small vessel in high concentrations thus increasing the effective sludge retention time and allowing sludge to be more effectively retained.
A variety of anaerobic technologies are available in the EWT portfolio, from the most basic anaerobic ponds/lagoons to advanced medium and high-rate processes. Each has its strengths and we can apply the most appropriate technology to a given application.
Anaerobic technology is also applied to a variety of waste-to-energy applications, from biogas generation from industrial wastewater to conversion of semi-soli wastes and slurries to renewable energy. The biogas (methane) generated in such systems can be utilized to generate in such systems can be utilized to generate stream in a boiler and displace fossil fuels or to generate electricity in a variety of engines and fuel cells. Separated food wastes from municipal solid waste food processing residues and distillery bottoms are all excellent candidates for waste-to-energy technology.
