In nature, biological processes break down waste and substances in water, making it sustainable. But in the early 19th century, as population growth exceeded the natural processes' capabilities to treat the water, wastewater became a significant problem, particularly in urban areas. In England, for example, wastewater polluted the Thames and sickened the citizens of London.
