ISA And Beamex To Co-Host Webinar On Calibrating Analytical Instruments

The International Society of Automation (ISA) and its corporate partner, Beamex, Inc., will co-host a free webinar 30 March 2017 on calibrating analytical instrumentation.

The webinar, which will be held from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time, will feature three automation experts: Ian Verhappen, Senior Project Manager at CIMA+; Ned Espy, Technical Director at Beamex; and Roy Tomalino, Calibration Engineer at Beamex.

This is the first of a series of webinars on maintaining analytical instrumentation. Common applications and challenges relating to analytical instrumentation as well as calibration best practices will be explained. The webinar will provide examples of how to document “one-sided” calibrations, such as pH/ORP and gas sensors/analyzers. This approach can apply to other instrumentation as well, such as meters, DCS and PLC inputs.

As Tomalino, Beamex Calibration Engineer, explains, “calibrating analytical devices is often times one-sided. Not to say it’s not fair but you tend to have a calibration standard on one side of the test and a display of numbers on the other. The display needs to be entered or keyed in somewhere. This manual entry on the input or output is why we call it a one-sided calibration. It’s still legitimate. It’s just not automated.”

The webinar, Tomalino continues, will focus on “the most common analytic calibrations. We’ll start with pH. Testing for pH is just about everywhere. Whether you are checking the cooling water discharge back to the river, the pH balance of your favorite beverage or the neutrality of your eye drops, this test is critical. It must be done right. What’s the best way to handle this test? We’ll cover that. What are the most common mistakes made testing pH? We’ll cover that, too.”

About the presenters

Ian Verhappen
Ian Verhappen, Senior Project Manager at CIMA+, is a Certified Automation Professional (CAP), Certified Specialist in Analytical Technology, and Professional Engineer in several Canadian provinces. Verhappen possesses more than 30 years of experience in the automation industry, including 25 years in a plant support role and as a site process analyzer specialist. He is also a certified instructor, contributor to ISA’s Process Analyzer handbook as well as the Instrument Engineers' Handbook by Béla Lipták, and columnist for several trade journals. Verhappen is also actively involved in the development of global automation standards, including those related to process analysis for ISA and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), representing Canada on a number of committees.

Ned Espy
Ned Espy, Technical Director at Beamex, has more than 27 years of direct field experience in instrumentation measurement applications. He’s been concentrating on calibration management at Beamex for more than 20 years.

Espy is a recognized expert in developing best practices for calibration, particularly on temperature, pressure and multi-variable instrument calibration. A consistent editorial contributor to leading industry publications, Espy has received significant acclaim within the automation industry. Roy Tomalino
Tomalino, Beamex Calibration Engineer, possesses more than 16 years of technical training experience. He has served as a trainer, certified developer and technical advisor on four continents to people from more than 40 countries.

Tomalino played a key role at Honeywell’s Fort Collins, Colorado office, where he supported the “DocuMint” Calibration Management Software and numerous calibrators as a trainer, certified developer and technical advisor. He also served as a worldwide trainer for Hewlett Packard. Today, Tomalino is a vital asset at Beamex, supporting customers and the Beamex team in North America.
